Description

An archaeological desk-based assessment undertaken in 1993 in advance of the development of a golf course at High Legh examined the origins and history of the estate and village of High Legh and what remains today. The report discusses the origin of High Legh Park which, significantly, may represent an example of a late Saxon deer park, one of only some 35 sites known in England. Also discussed is the evidence for the two medieval manors, East and West Hall, their Chapels of Ease, and the accompanying estate. Other sites included/identified are the North Cheshire Ridge Roman Road, turnpiked in the 18th century, which forms the southern boundary of the estate, a potential prehistoric ring ditch, also ridge and furrow cultivation and several marl pits.
