Description
This event represents an intensive excavation of the northern half of the amphitheatre under Thompson, between 1960 - 1969 (1). This work exposed the half-round of the outer and concentric stone walls, the seating bank, the arena floor, and each of the gates of the amphitheatre's second phase, and sealed by the later seating bank, the beam slots and post holes of the earlier, timber frame construction (2). Several medieval and post medieval features were also recorded.
