Summary

During excavations at the Roman amphitheatre between 1965 and 1969, medieval features were recorded in the area of the former eastern entrance to the amphitheatre. Three cess pits, two square or rectangular ones both measuring approximately 1.8m square and one circular one measuring 1.4m in diameter. Few finds were recovered from the fills, but these were exclusively medieval pottery.

Full Description

During excavations at the Roman amphitheatre between 1965 and 1969, medieval features were recorded in the area of the former eastern entrance to the amphitheatre. Three cess pits were located in the area of the east entrance, two square or rectangular ones both measuring approximately 1.8m square and one circular one measuring 1.4m in diameter. Few finds were recovered from the fills, but these were exclusively medieval pottery, with one sherd of thirteenth century date (2).
