Description

The special interest that justifies designation of the St. Bartholomew’s Conservation Area derives from the following features: • Its origin as the core of the medieval settlement of Wilmslow in a low-lying location beside the River Bollin. • St. Bartholomew ’s Church and its historic churchyard; • The architectural quality of the area’s buildings, including nine listed buildings. • Buildings associated w ith the town’s former fustian cutting industry. • The planned formality of the Memorial Gardens. • The River Bollin and its two bridges, one of which is dated 1834 and is listed grade II. • Trees, particularly along the south bank of the Bollin. • Green open space around the church that is the eastern end of a green corridor along the valley bottom. • The length of old stone paving along Chancel Lane. • Distinctive items of local interest e.g. stone font and sundial, lych gate, street name sign and churchyard wall. • Westward rural views from the churchyard.
