Summary

Grade I listed Church of St Bartholomew. It has 13th and 14th century origins but was remodelled in the 1490 and the 16th centuries. It was restored in the 19th century . It is built of ashlar sandstone and has a stone-slate roof. The Nave has fine roof of around 1520 with cambered tie beams and moulded beams in panelled ceiling with gilded bosses. To the north is Jesus or Trafford Chapel with effigies of Humphrey Newton and wife who died in 1536. There is also the tomb of Henry Trafford, died 1537. To the south is Prescot or Booth Chapel ,including an early brass of Robert Booth and wife who died in 1460. Under the chancel is Crypt Chapel of around 1300 reached by spiral stone staircase. The first reference to this church is in 1246, although one Richard Fitton is known to have been a resident priest in 1178. A watching brief during underpinning showed that the fundations incorporated several pieces of medieval dressed stone which probably belonged to the pre-1490 church
