Abstract/Summary
During August to September 2006 a gas main, stretching the length of Nuns Road, Chester, was replaced. A continuous linear trench was excavated by staff of May Gurney in order to locate the existing gas main prior to replacement. Additionally, in January 2007, the trench was extended into Grosvenor Street at the south end of Nuns Road. Both elements of the project are included within this report.
During the trenching along Nuns Road a series of short c.2m long representative sections of the deposits and features encountered was recorded at intervals of approximately 20m (see Figures 1 & 2). With the exception of the current tarmac road surface and the underlying limestone hardcore – repeated contexts (1) & (2) respectively - the deposits recorded in each section were given individual context numbers, primarily to locate any artefacts recovered; in reality, however, the basic stratigraphic sequence observed was, in general, consistent along much of the pipe trench. A full photographic record was also completed.
The finds recovered during the project have been reported upon summarily below.
