Summary

A Roman lead salt pan found in 1998. It was folded up and had the name VIVENTIUS marked out in relief on the side. This is one of two salt pans found with this name on. Its approximate original dimensions were 108 x 98 x 12cm. The brine springs of Cheshire are known to have been worked since the iron age. The discovery of lead salt pans with roman inscriptions reveals that the Romans were using the open pan method of salt production. Brine is heated in a shallow pan over low temperatures to create large salt crystals or high temperatures for fine salt.
