Summary

Grappenhall is mentioned in the Domesday Survey when it was recorded as 'Gropenhale'.The first element 'grop' is Old English and means 'a ditch or a drain' and the third element 'halh' is also Old English and means 'a piece of flat alluvial land by the side of a river'. As the parish once extended as far as the south bank of the Mersey the name probably means 'a ditch or drain through the alluvial land by the side of the river'. The early nucleus of village centres around the med Church, stocks and inn. Post medieval expansion spread to the west along Church Road. The loacl buildings mainly from the late 17th and 18th centuries.
