Full Description
Bronze Age round barrow. Quarried in 1845 revealing a dome-shaped mound of layers of sandstone rubble, 60 yards in circumference and 6 ft high at the centre. On the north-east side an urn inverted on a flat stone was found, containing bones. Fragments of charcoal and earth were found over a great part of the floor of the mound (1). Urn has rim circumference of 2ft 7 ins and is 1 ft 1 inch high. Decoration below rim (2). Collared urn. Decoration of cord impressed, hatched triangles, alternately upright and inverted on collar. Double line of horizontal cord impressions on internal bevel (3). In 1961 OS reported centre almost ploughed out. Recognisable but not portrayable. Grass covered. 18m diameter, maximum height 0.3m (4). In 1978 Longley reported it was barely distinguishable as a mound. 0.2m high, approx 20m diameter. Under grass (3).
