Summary

This prehistoric barrow cemetery first recorded in the 16th century by John Leland. They are noted again by Ormerod in the 19th century though two of them had been removed by then. Today only five of the original seven are identifiable. The remaining five are Scheduled Monuments. Round barrows are a type of burial mound, particularly used in the Bronze Age. Mounds of earth and stone were placed over a burial or cremation. A single barrow could be re-used for several later burials.

Full Description

Round barrow recorded as part of the Seven Lows barrow cemetery. First ntoed in the 16th century by Leland and again by Ormerod in the 19th century. Ormerod describes this mound as 32m (1), however, in its current state the mound is
oval in form measuring 18m by 16m in diameter and survives to a height of 0.4m (3). In 1977 it was recorded as being 10m in diameter and surviving to a height of 0.2m (4)

In 1961, the Ordnance Survey reported the site as a fragment of unportrayable mutilated mound on edge of natural slope, probably a round barrow, but not recognisable as such (5).

Sited on crest of slope down to dry valley. The mound is under grass, crossed by a path, impinged on a fence and gate and somewhat disturbed by animals grazing and using the path en route to the milking parlour (2).
