Summary

Remains of a cross situated at the western end of St Cross Church. It is late decorated medieval masonry in red sandstone. A brass tablet records that the socket stone was found under the surface of the old churchyard in 1846. This may have been the original market cross from which the Cross Town part of Knutsford derived its name. It is now in porch of St.Cross Church.

Full Description

Remains of a cross situated at the W end of St Cross Church. A brass tablet records that the socket stone was found under the surface of the old churchyard in 1846 (1). This may have been the original market cross from which the Cross Town part of Knutsford derived its name (2). Now in porch of St.Cross Church. Late decorated medieval masonry in red sandstone. Now used as holy water stoop and cemented to floor (4).
