Abstract/Summary

St Bartholomew’s church stands in a prominent position on the southern side of river Bollin. A church has been present on the site since at least the mid 13th century and the present building includes much fabric dating from a rebuilding in the early 16th century. As a result of proposals to construct an extension adjacent to the north aisle, the footprint of the proposed new build was subject to an archaeological evaluation by means of two hand-dug 1.2m. square trenches. These revealed that all early archaeological remains had been removed by the digging of numerous later 19th and early 20th-century graves, whose cuts were clearly visible in the natural deposit at the base of both trenches. No further work will be required as the foundations of the extension will be constructed within the disturbed deposit revealed in the trenches, without the need to disturb the in situ burials further.
