I
An important late C16 building. Timber frame and plaster, painted black and white; three storeys; slight overhang to each storey with enriched brackets; restored oak mullioned and transomed windows with leaded casements to ground and first storeys; second-storey fenestration of particular interest, consisting of continuous gallery windows having restored oak mullioned and transomed casements with leaded lights. Covered-way to left with modern entrance to hotel; recessed modern shop front to no. 26 on left-hand side. Tiled roof; gabled ends. Good C18 assembly room at rear, also C19 additions. INTERIOR: 2nd floor was once a continuous gallery, but partitioned off probably in C18. Interesting C18 enclosed Bar in hall, recently well restored when inspected. The original "Crown" was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1583 and the present building was erected soon after that event. It seems to have been the chief Inn of the town. The Duke of Monmouth dined here in 1682.
Nos. 12, 16 and 18A, 18, 20, 20A and nos. 22 to 28 (even) form a group.
