Summary

A group of round barrows that crosses the parish boundaries of Goostrey, Twemlow and Swettenham. A total of six barrows have been identified. One of the barrows was totally excavated in 1987-88 revealing a primary burial pit with a broken collared urn and cremated bone. 4 unurned cremations were also found. Another of the mounds has been completely removed, possibly during landscaping the grounds of Jodrell Hall c.1899-1905. The four remaining barrows are Scheduled Monuments. Round barrows are a type of burial mound, particulary used in the Bronze age. Mounds of earth and stone were placed over a burial or cremation. A single barrow could be re-used for several later burials.

Full Description

Site of round mound. The site now comprises a sunken lawn, flower beds and a playing field. There is no trace of the mound (1) and (2). The mound may have been removed during landscaping the grounds of Jodrell Hall c.1899-1905. Tradition says that one piece of pottery was found in it (3). Construction of an extension to Terra Nova School in 1992 involved building work being carried out adjacent to the demolished barrow on the north west side. A watching brief was carried out; Report no 2032. Post medieval features were found, apparently contemporary with the construction of Jodrell hall, and one feature, undated but for a small piece of ancient brick. The topsoil had been ploughed in the Post-medieval period, and truncated when the school was constructed in the 1970s (6).
