Summary

Grade II* listed red sandstone church. Built c.1500 and restored in 1903. A chapel existed here in the time of Richard I, then in Astbury Parish but it was made an independent church in the reign of Henry VIII. The early building was probably timber and was rebuilt during the 15th century.

Full Description

Church of St Oswald, Brereton Green. Built c.1500, restored 1903, of red sandstone. Nave, aisles, embraced west tower, south porch, chancel. Interior: nave of four bays plus tower bay. Camber-beam panelled nave roof; a deep panelled truss between nave and chancel; three cambered beams in chancel. Octagonal font 1660 (1). Registers begin in 1538. Records from 1297 (2). Full architectural description (1) and (2). A chapel existed here in the time of Richard I. It was then in Astbury Parish but was made an independent church in the reign of Henry VIII. The fabric was rebuilt during the 15th century, probably replacing a timber building (3).
