Full Description
<1> Turner R C, 1986, Edge - Notes on the Archaeological & Historic Landscapes (Unpublished Report). SCH1099.
Lower Wood Pool. At the western end is an earthen dam, whose western face is battered. At the centre of the dam is a tooled ashlar sluice gate through which the modern stream runs. The opening contains a later brick structure with a wooden sluice gate surviving, but the settings of earlier gates, grills and perhaps fish traps can be seen between the two revetment walls.
<2> See map for surveyor, c.1837-51, Cheshire Tithe Maps and Awards, EDT 152/2 (Maps and Plans). SCH3266.
The Tithe map for Edge township clearly depicts the pool, the leat (CHER 1699/2/2) and the overflow channel on the southern side of the dam. A small sub-rectangular extension of the pond on the northern side of the dam may indicate another overflow channel.
