Grade II Listed bronze statue on granite plinth of Sir John Brunner, made in 1922 by W.Goscombe. Originally located in front of the Research Laboratory, Winnington, but relocated, together with a statue of Ludwig Mond, in 1995, to stand in front of Mond House, the headquarters of the Brunner-Mond Works company, in 1995.
The Brunner-Mond Works at Winnington were developed in the 1870s following the purchase of the Winnington Estate by John Brunner and Ludwig Mond in 1873. The Brunner-Mond Works were used for the production of soda for the ammonia-soda process required for producing an alkali which was a method considered to be less environmentally harmful than earlier methods. The Brunner and Mond families moved into Winnington Hall (List No. 1310245) in 1873. By 1892 the company had become the largest producer of soda in the world.
<3> AOC Archaeology Group, 2019, Condition report on Mond and Brunner Statues at Mond House, Winnington, R4408 (Client Report). SCH8839.
As part of the Heritage Assessment undertaken in 2019 (see source 2), a condition survey was undertaken of the two statues of Sir John Brunner and Ludwig Mond which are proposed for relocation. The report provides a condition record of the statues, documenting any condition problems, areas of deterioration or weakness. It also provides a baseline record prior to further anticipated works, which include dismantling and transport to storage. The overall condition of the statue of Sir John Brunner is considered to be good, taking into account the age and location of the statue in the vicinity of a chemical processing plant.
