Source/Archive record SCH8838 - Mond and Brunner Statues, Winnington: Heritage Assessment - Listed Building Consent

A heritage assessment was produced in 2019 to inform applications for Listed Building Consent to remove and relocate two Grade II Listed statues currently located outside Mond House, Winnington. The two statues are of Sir John Brunner (List No. 1161131) and Ludwig Mond (List No. 1139114). The statue of Sir John Brunner, originally located in front of the Research Laboratory, was built after Brunner’s death in 1919. The statue of Ludwig Mond, constructed in 1912, was originally located in Winnington Park; it was moved to the Research Laboratory, Winnington Works, in the late 1920s. Both statues were brought to their present position, in front of Mond House, the headquarters of the Brunner-Mond Works company, in 1995. The Brunner-Mond Works at Winnington were developed in the 1870s following the purchase of the Winnington Estate by John Brunner and Ludwig Mond in 1873. The Brunner-Mond Works were used for the production of soda for the ammonia-soda process required for producing an alkali which was a method considered to be less environmentally harmful than earlier methods. The Brunner and Mond families moved into Winnington Hall (List No. 1310245) in 1873. By 1892 the company had become the largest producer of soda in the world. The need to relocate the statues arises from a proposal for a new residential, commercial and social development which will include the demoition of the former Brunner-Mond works buildings, including Mond House.
