Site Event/Activity record ECH6810 - Condition report on Mond and Brunner Statues at Mond House, Winnington

AOC Archaeology Group was commissioned to undertake a Heritage Assessment (see ECH6807/SCH8838) to inform an application for Listed Building Consent to remove and relocate two Grade II Listed statues, currently located outside Mond House, Winnington. The statues are of John Brunner and Ludwig Mond, who jointly set up the Brunner-Mond Works at Winnington in the 1870s for the production of ammonia-soda. The two Grade II Listed statues of Ludwig Mond and Sir John Brunner are located outside Mond House, Winnington at the decommissioned Tata Chemical Plant. The statue of Ludwig Mond was designed by Edouard Lanteri and erected in Winnington Park in 1913. The statue of Sir John Brunner was designed by William Goscombe John and was erected next to Ludwig Mond’s statue in 1922. The statues have previously been moved several times. Ludwig Mond’s statue was moved in front of the old research building on Winnington Lane in the late 1920s, before being relocated to its present location in front of Mond House in 1995. Sir John Brunner’s statue was moved to a patch of grass in front of the old research building in 1926, before being moved to near Mond’s statue in front of the old research building in the late 1920s, before finally being moved to its present location in 1995. Prior to removal and relocation, AOC Archaeology conservators were requested to undertake a condition check of the statues. The report provides a condition record of the statues, documenting any condition problems, areas of deterioration or weakness. It also provides a baseline record prior to further anticipated works, which include dismantling and transport to storage. (1)
