Summary

Plas Newton was a country mansion dating from the mid ninteenth century. It sat within extensive landscaped gardens and woodland and was approached via a serpentine carriage drive. It was occupied by wealthy Liverpool solicitor, Alfred Tyrer. After Tyrer's death in 1946, the estate declined; housing was built in the grounds in the 1980s and the mansion was demolished and replaced by an apartment block in 2005. However, some elements of the estate survived, including the coach house and stable block (converted to a residential property the 'White Gables' in the 1960s/70s), a walled garden, and derelict remains of the greenhouses within the walled garden. These surviving elements were subject to an assessment in 2017 prior to proposals of re-development.
