Abstract/Summary

An historic building record was produced in 2019 for White Gables, Plas Newton Lane, Upton. White Gables is the former coach house and stable block of Plas Newton, a demolished country house, and stands within the remnants of a walled garden. White Gables is neither statutorily nor locally listed and permission has been granted for its demolition and replacement by a new residential apartment. Plas Newton dated from the mid-19th century and in its early 20th century heyday was occupied by wealthy Liverpool solicitor Alfred Tyrer. The mansion sat within extensive landscaped gardens and woodland and was approached via a serpentine carriage drive. Exotic plants and fruit were grown within its walled garden. Tyrer died in 1946 and in later years the estate entered a decline. Housing was built in the grounds in the 1980s and the mansion was demolished and replaced by an apartment block in 2005. The White Gables site is now the only surviving remnant of the estate which consists of the following:- • The former coach house, the principal building of the site, dating probably from the mid-19th century but converted to residential use in the 1960s/1970s • An original stable wing attached to the west of the coach house, mid 19th century and enlarged 1872-1899 • A later stable wing, built 1899-1911, on the east side • A walled garden to the rear of the coach house • The derelict remains of greenhouses within the walled garden • A freestanding large store/workshop building to the northeast, probably 1950s
