Abstract/Summary

Heritage Assessment undertaken in 2017 for White Gables, Upton, Chester, prior to proposed redevelopment, including demolition of the property itself. White Gables is the former coach house and stable block of Plas Newton, a demolished country house, and it stands within the remains of the walled garden. It is not listed nationally or locally. Plas Newton dated from the mid nineteenth century and in its early twentieth century heyday was occupied by wealthy Liverpool solicitor, Alfred Tyrer. The mansion sat within extensive, landscaped gardens and woodland and was approached by a serpentive carriage drive.Tyrer died in 1946 and the estate declined. Housing was built in the grounds in the 1980s and the mansion was demolished and replaced by an apartment block in 2005. White Gables is the only surviving remnant of the estate and includes: a mid nineteenth century coach house; an origninal stable wing attached on the west of the coach housed; a later stable wing (1899-1911), to the east; a walled garden including the remains of greenhouses; a large store/workshop (1950s) to the north-east.
