Abstract/Summary

Archaeological watching brief, undertaken in August 1996, at The Angel Public House, 96 King Street, Knutsford, during a programme of alteration and extension. Although much of the redevelopment plot had been deeply cellared during the late post medieval period, pockets of rich archaeological deposits survived. The layers observed contained pottery datable to a period of occupation spanning the 15th to the 18th centuries and material such as leatherwork and wood survived in the moist soils above the clay subsoil. An analysis of the organic remains indicates that shoemaking was one of the trades practising in the area during the late medieval period. In the centre of the watching brief area an 18th century, brick-lined well was recorded.
