Monument record 11388 - Medieval port at Port Pool

Please read our .

Summary

A medieval port outside the city, known as the Port Pool, was located near the Stone Bridge probably where it crosses Finchett’s Gutter. Prior to the 18th century canalisation of the Dee the river would have extended over the Sealand Road area as far as the Stone Bridge on Cheyney Road (Garden Lane). Although its exact location is not known place name evidence has long referred to Cheyney Road as the road to the port pool since the 13th century, while field name evidence from the area indicates the pool was located in the vicinity of Finchett’s Gutter. The port pool served as an anchorage for the offloading of goods outside the city, it was probably created here to compensate for the silting up of the river.
