Summary

A bridge is recorded on Ordnance Survey First edition maps on the Cheyney Road crossing Finchitts Gutter. Although the stream has since been diverted and the bridge has become defunct, the stone parapets remain in situ. A bridge appears to have been located here since the 13th century at least when the name first appears as 'stanbrugg' or stonnbruge' while by the 16th century it was also referred to as the poole bridge close to a medieval wharf or anchorage. In the 20th century the bridge became increasingly impassable for vehicles and a new route was finally introduced in the 1970s bypassing the bridge entirely. It survives as a public access. The present bridge is of red sandstone blocks and substantially covered by vegetation, primarily of a post medieval date it is possible that fragments of an earlier, medieval, date survive in the present structure.
