Several archaeological test pits excavated to the rear of the Ship Inn in Handbridge in 2008 encountered evidence of a possible backfilled quarry in the cellar of the inn. The deposit consisted of crushed sandstone material with no datable finds.

Several archaeological test pits excavated to the rear of the Ship Inn in Handbridge in 2008 encountered evidence of a possible backfilled quarry in test pit 3 located within the cellar of the inn. The deposit consisted of crushed sandstone material with no datable finds. (1)
