Summary

Several archaeological test pits excavated to the rear of the Ship Inn in Handbridge in 2008 encountered traces of a buried ground surface at a depth of 0.85m below present ground level. A quantity of early post medieval ceramic evidence including 16th to 17th century locally produced ware and a single sherd of German stoneware. Further archaeological investigations at the Ship Inn in the same year identified further evidence of post medieval deposits. A single trench excavated in the area of the planned extension revealed the original rear wall of the house as well as a series of post medieval deposits including a cobblestone surface of a probable 18th century date.
