Full Description
Archaeological investigations at the south east angle tower in 1930 and more recently in 2012 have recorded traces of the Roman extra mural berm – or road – between the fortress wall and the ditch.
Investigations by Prof Newstead in 1930 first identified traces of a narrow cobbled surface – or berm – between the wall and the inner lip of the ditch, however, it was not investigated in detail due to significant truncation in the medieval period. (1)
Recent investigations carried out by Earthworks in 2012 in advance of landscaping and enhancement to the area required the excavations of 26 small trenches each measuring 0.50m by 0.50m with the aim of identifying the depth of archaeological survival. Evidence was again recorded of a similar surface [304] approximately 0.40m in width and consisting of sandstone fragments set in a loose mortar and the base of the Roman wall. The surface was located in trench 3 at a depth of just 0.32m excavated against the outer face of the Roman wall to the northeast of the tower. (2)
