Full Description

This section of the western part of the city wall extends from the Watergate (CHER 12000/42) to Bonwaldesthorne Tower (CHER 12000/3). The medieval stonework dates to the late eleventh or early twelfth century, and sporadically repaired throughout the medieval and post medieval periods. The circuit of the walls was converted into a raised promenade between 1702 and 1708. It was altered more significantly towards the north end where a large opening was created for the Chester to Holyhead railway line. The outer face is approximately 18 courses high, with additional buttresses of indeterminate date. At ground level within the wall is approximately flush with the pavement, formerly the wall-walk, but shows some exposed stonework towards the Watergate, to the south, and Bonewaldesthorne Tower to the north (3).
