Summary

This section of the southern part of the city walls extends from Barnaby’s Tower (CHER 12000/27) to the eastern Bridgegate tower (CHER 12000/32). Originally built in the late eleventh century or early twelfth century, the coursed red sandstone rubble wall can be assumed that it was subject to repair at various times throughout the medieval period. This section of the walls was damaged during the Civil War between 1644 and 1646, and was converted to a raised promenade between 1702 and 1708.

Full Description

This section of the southern part of the city walls extends from Barnaby’s Tower (CHER 12000/27) to the eastern Bridgegate tower (CHER 12000/32). Originally built in the late eleventh century or early twelfth century, the coursed red sandstone rubble wall can be assumed that it was subject to repair at various times throughout the medieval period. This section of the walls was damaged during the Civil War between 1644 and 1646, and was converted to a raised promenade between 1702 and 1708. Parts have a plinth with weathered cap, and post medieval added buttresses are visible, with some patching. This part of the walls is approximately 290m long, while the wall-walk is about 2m wide.
