Full Description
Archaeological investigations between Russell Street and City Road, on the site of the former Ryland's Garage between 2004 and 2005 identified evidence of post medieval features in trench 3 of the excavations. The evidence consisted of an early post medieval cultivation soil over which several phases of structural activity could be recorded.
The first phase consisted of a 17th-18th century cellar comprising the remains of a timber floor and a slate/plaster lined wall that was later back filled with clay. The second phase of activity consisted of an 18th century timber framed building of which two parallel slots and packing for sill beams was encountered. The third phase of activity then dates to the late 18th century and consisted of a timber and brick re-organisations of the earlier timber framed structure. This period of structural activity was sealed in the 19th century by a demolition layer into which a tanning pit was cut. (1)
