No 158 Foregate Street consists of a mid 18th century town house, later subdivided. The left bay on the corner with Dee Lane was rebuilt in 1907 by W.T. Lockwood with a moulded terracotta coping to half-round gable with cartouche dated 1907 and 3 ball finials. The building is of brick with stone dressings and a grey sate roof.
<2> University of Manchester Archaeological Unit, 1998, The Bars, 156-158 Foregate Street, Chester: Building Evaluation, R2249 (Client Report). SCH3998.
A building survey carried out in 1998 identified three major phases of construction suggesting a date of construction in the 16th-17th century.
The earliest structural evidence in the late 16th and 17th centuries consisted of two timber framed structures separated by an alleyway. The evidence for this phase of activity remained slight, comprising four stretches of timber framing around a later, inserted, staircase. These timbers indicate two separate structures of two storeys with the later staircase occupying the former alleyway.
In the early 18th century the layout of the two buildings underwent significant reconstruction when the alley was infilled and the house remodelled in the Georgian style.
The final phase of alteration dates to around 1907 when the facade was again susbtantially rebuilt and the building re-roofed
