Description

This event was a building and historic fabric survey of the Grade II listed 156-158 Foregate St., Chester, also known as The Bars. The survey was carried out in March, 1998, and four sections of a timber framing were identified within the building, along with some Georgian architectural detailing, including a staircase on the first floor landing. Three major phases were identified, the timber framing appears to date to the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when there were two structures separated by an alleyway. This was followed by a mid eighteenth century remodelling and filling of the alley, and then the rebuilding of the façade of 158 Foregate St. In c1907.
