Full Description

A monument dedicated to Matthew Henry, erected in 1860, is found at the Grosvenor St. roundabout, at the end of Nicholas St. It is a polished granite obelisk inscribed with ‘MATTHEW HENRY VDM BORN 18TH OCTOBER 1662 DIED 22ND JUNE 1714 INTERRED IN TRINITY CHURCH IN THIS CITY’. Matthew Henry was an important local figure of the non-conformist church, who began his ministry at Chester in 1687 (1, 2). The monument sits on the area of land formerly occupied by the cemetery of the graveyard of the former church of St Bridget and St Martin (CHER 10047).
