Summary

The New Church of St Bridget’s was built in a sizeable plot in 1829 and designed by William Cole, with a surrounding graveyard and a boys school in the eastern corner which survives. The Church was demolished in 1892 however the graveyard remained until the mid 1960s when it was removed to make way for the inner ring road.

Full Description

The medieval church of St Bridget’s was formerly located at what is now the junction between Bridge Street and the Grosvenor Road, however with the construction of the latter the church was demolished and subsequently moved to a new site at the southern end of the Grosvenor Road.

The New Church of St Bridget’s was built in a sizeable plot in 1829 and designed by William Cole, with a surrounding graveyard and a boys school in the eastern corner which survives. The Church was demolished in 1892 however the graveyard remained until the mid 1960s when it was removed to make way for the inner ring road. (3)

Hemingway notes that a number of interments from inside the medieval church of were relocated to the vaults in the new churchyard. (5)

The school building remains in situ. It is built of stone with a grey slate roof and is currently used as a homeless shelter.
