CHESTER CITY (IM) SJ4065NW NICHOLAS STREET 595-1/5/272 Cenotaph to Matthew Henry on Grosvenor Street Roundabout GV II Monument. 1860. Polished granite obelisk on square base of 3 sandstone steps. The obelisk is inscribed MATTHEW HENRY VDM BORN 18TH OCTOBER 1662 DIED 22ND JUNE 1714 INTERRED IN TRINITY CHURCH IN THIS CITY. Matthew Henry, born at Broad Oak Iscoyd then in the parish of Malpas, Cheshire, but now in Clwyd was a noted divine and commentator. Ordained privately in London, he took up his ministry as a non-conformist in Chester in 1687, living in Bollands Court, White Friars until 1712. His biblical commentaries are notable. The roundabout island occupies part of the graveyard of the former churches of St Bridget and St Martin (not included). (Dictionary of National Biography). Listing NGR: SJ4039865898
