Summary

Archaeological investigations carried out in two phases to the rear of 49-51 Lower Bridge Street in 1990 identified a complex series of phases from the Roman through to the post medieval period. Unfortunately the excavations remain unpublished and information is limited, the phased activity at the site was produced by subsequent examination of the primary archive. The results of an initial evaluation provided only limited evidence of medieval activity, however subsequent excavations carried out over a wider area identified a number of 13th century features.

Full Description

Archaeological investigations carried out in two phases to the rear of 49-51 Lower Bridge Street in 1990 identified a complex series of phases from the Roman through to the post medieval period. The results of an initial evaluation provided only limited evidence of medieval activity (1), however subsequent excavations carried out over a wider area identified a number of 13th century features (Phase 5 of the site). Unfortunately the excavations remain unpublished and information is limited, the phased activity at the site was produced by subsequent examination of the primary archive.

The evidence from this phase of activity appears to consist of two pits, a surface and a post hole all providing tentative dates in the 13th century. A single pit of a slightly later date (13th-14th century) was attributed to a later phase. (2)
