Full Description

Discovery of a north-south aligned road between two Roman structures during archaeological investigations east of Trinity Street in 1950. The excavated area was a continuation east of an earlier trench excavated in 1949 which recorded the intervallum road (CHER 8280/11) and evidence of a Roman structure (CHER 8307/1). The north-south aligned road was recorded to the east of this structure and parallel with a second structure at the eastern end of the trench (CHER 8308/2).

The trench revealed the entire width of the road extending over an area of approximately 3.65m. The surface itself comprised well laid sandstone approximately 0.60m in depth. To the west of the road a probable sleeper beam trench or timber lined drain was also recorded. (1)
