Description

Limited excavation in 1950 comprising a single trench 63ft in length with the intention of exploring the Roman buildings discovered the previous year (1949). Roman activity was recorded at a depth of 7-8ft although modern disturbance in the upper levels was recorded. This phase of excavation recorded two patches of flooring along with the partial remains of five walls. (1) Further excavations were carried out in land off Trinity Street in 1953 comprising five additonal trenches. This phase noted further evidence of modern disturbance in the area. Limited evidence of an earlier timber phase to the buildings was recorded, pottery of a late 2nd century. Four walls and two column bases were recorded. (1) An 18th century rubbish was also recorded containing a large assemblage of pottery and glass. Insignia's from several local inns were recorded (2)
