Full Description
Archaeological investigations at St Martin's Way in 1945 and again in 1963 encountered possible evidence of the interval tower comprising the north and south parallel walls and a possible collapse layer representing the east wall. Although the 1945 excavations did not identify the wall foundation as belonging to an interval tower it was later suggested this was the case (1). The wall foundations appeared to extend to a depth of between 0.84-1.06m below the level of the rampart base and were approximately 1.5m at its widest point. (1)
