An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in 2019 during the excavation of several test-pits at the site of a proposed multi-use development, the Chester Northgate Redevelopment, Phase 1. Although services were found to have extensively truncated the archaeological remains a deposit of sandstone rubble was identified at the eastern end of Test-pit 14, which may relate to tumble from a wall. The location of this test-pit, on St Martin’s Way, could suggest that this tumble may have originated from the western rampart of the Roman legionary fortress, although again there was no dating evidence to confirm this suggestion.

Additionally, three other test pits (Test pits 3, 5 and 15) contained east-west aligned, sandstone walls and are thought to represent remains of the legionary barrack-blocks (see CHER 8696, 8697, 8698).
