Full Description
Archaeological investigation at 44-52 Bridge Street (formerly the Owen Owen store) recorded evidence for the survival of important and deeply stratified archaeological deposits. Although the bulk of the site noted significant modern disturbance, the excavation of a lift shaft recorded remains from the Roman through to the modern period.
The earliest phase of activity dates to the foundation of the fortress in the late first century and comprised two closely spaced beam slots and were interpreted as a possible granary or perhaps two buildings back-to-back. The beam slots were on an east-west alignment and spaced approximately 1m apart (1)
