Full Description
Archaeological investigation at 44-52 Bridge Street (formerly the Owen Owen store) recorded evidence for the survival of important and deeply stratified archaeological deposits. Although the bulk of the site noted significant modern disturbance, the excavation of a lift shaft recorded remains from the Roman through to the modern period.
A substantial layer of clay loam containing lumps and flecks of mortar, sandstone fragments and charcoal sealed the late Roman deposits. Finds recovered from the layer included fourth century pottery from the East Midlands and Oxfordshire although earlier wares were also present, along with tegulae and animal remains. This layer is interpreted as the collapse or demolition layer of the Roman building dating to the 4th century. (1)
