Full Description

Archaeological investigation at 44-52 Bridge Street (formerly the Owen Owen store) recorded evidence for the survival of important and deeply stratified archaeological deposits. Although the bulk of the site noted significant modern disturbance, the excavation of a lift shaft recorded remains from the Roman through to the modern period.

Immediately overlying the 4th century Roman demolition layer (CHER 8198) was a 20-30cm thick layer of compact sandy clay loam with few finds. This layer may represent a period of post Roman abandonment or perhaps cultivation soils in the post Roman to early Saxon period (1)
