Full Description
<1> L - P Archaeology, 2002, Archaeological Evaluation Report of Land at The Bars, Area 2, Chester, R2440 (Client Report). SCH4404.
Within Trench 1 at the site of The Bars, Area 2, was a thin dark grey silty clay layer with charcoal inclusions and containing one sherd of Roman pottery and one piece of glass. The layer appears to be the dirty / occupation surface of the natural clay, and appears to represent the Roman horizon of the site (1). Also recorded, and stratigraphically later, is a large east-west running ditch with no datable finds. The excavation report suggests that this might have been a boundary from a Roman field system.
<2> L - P Archaeology, 2004, Archaeological Excavation Report of land at The Bars: Area 2, Chester, R3429 (Client Report). SCH7036.
Additional excavation at the site discovered first to second century pottery in association with this ditch.
