Summary

Cast iron milestone triangular in plan set in the sandstone flagged pavement that surrounds the fountain erected in 1854. The northwest face of the milestone records Stockport 6.5 miles and Manchester 13; the southeast face records Whaley Bridge 4 miles and Buxton 11. The triangular top records Cheshire County Council 1898. The lower half of the northwest face bears the manufacturers name 'W.H. Smith & Co. Whitchurch'. The fountain and the milestone are grade II listed buildings.

Full Description

Milestone: Dated 1898. Cast iron. Triangular in section with raking top. Left vertical face records distances to Stockport and Manchester, right vertical face, distances to Whaley Bridge and Buxton. "Cheshire County Council" and dated on the top (1).

Cast iron milestone triangular in plan set in the sandstone flagged pavement that surround the fountain erected in 1854. The northwest face of the milestone records Stockport 6.5 miles and Manchester 13; the southeast face records Whaley Bridge 4 miles and Buxton 11. The triangular top records Cheshire County Council 1898. The milestone stands 1.07m high by 0.48m wide by 0.25m deep. The back of the structure is hollow with two triangular plates to the side pieces. The monument is painted white with raised black lettering. The lower half of the northwest face bears the manufacturers name 'W.H. Smith & Co. Whitchurch' (2 & 3).
