Summary

The first documentary reference to Edge Mill dates from the fourteenth century. Edge Mill is an early seventeenth century stone mill building with graffiti depicting the date of 1647. The mill building has brick extensions dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. No machinery survives but the scratch marks of the water wheel can be seen on gable wall. The mill is now a cottage. Watermills are known to have been used in Britain during Roman and Saxon times. In the Domesday survey of 1086, around 6,000 mills were recorded. In medieval times each manor that the right to have its own mill with the peasants forced to use it. A tax was payable on all corn ground and there were fines for those to tried to mill corn in their own homes using hand querns.

An early seventeenth century stone mill building with a graffito date of 1647. The mill building has brick extensions dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. No machinery survives but the scratch marks of the water wheel can be seen on gable wall. A number of early features survive inside. Nearby is a small stable building and a two-stall pigsty.

The mill is now a cottage and the wheel was removed 40-50 years ago.
