Description
Historic environment desk-based assessment produced in 2023 considers land at Bellevue Lane BESS, Chester. The study site is considered to have a low potential for archaeological remains dating to all periods. The groundworks associated with the construction of the proposed development has the potential to have impacts upon any previously unrecorded deposits which may survive within the study site. Impacts upon the Scheduled Monument and three Listed Buildings within the 1km search area are not anticipated as a result of the proposed development. (1)
A Roman camp (1970/7) was located c. 370m to the north west of the study site,
which is protected as a Scheduled Monument (1015129). Features noted from
aerial photography comprised a rectangular enclosure with two entrances with trial
trenching recording a ditch which is thought to relate to the eastern side of the
camp.
4.11 The route of the Roman road between Chester and Manchester, known as Watling
Street, (844/1/0) extends across the southern extent of the search area. The road
connected the fortress at Chester to the forts at Northwich and Manchester.
