Description
Excavation of a lift shaft as part of a phased programmed of archaeological mitigation for a site known from previous evaluation to have 2 metres of archaeological deposits from Roman period onwards. This event related to the site known as Block 3. Additional phased archaeological mitigation expected at this site
Lift shaft excavation identified 5 peiods of activity
Period1. Prehistoric
Agricultural horizon and single flint artefact
Period 2. Roman
A sequence of layers and surfaces and evidence for timber structures. Sealed by a dark earth layer with 4th century pottery. Site would fall within an area of Barrackbuilding bounded by the fortresses inner perimeter road, the Via sagularis
Period 3. Saxon
A sequence of at least 3 industrial features occupying similar locations. Represents a period of intensive activity in the late Saxon period.
Period 4
A single deeply cut pit and subsequent soil layer which produced 13th-14th century pottery and a single Henry III silver shortcross penny (minted 1216-47)
Period 5 Post Medieval
A single gully feature was exposed. Pottery and clay pipe dating from the sencond half of the 17th century.
