Description

Archaeological monitoring of upgrading work to the water services along Dee Lane and the Headlands, Chester. This report describes the results of an archaeological watching brief carried out during groundworks at Dee Lane and The Headlands, Chester. The Watching Brief was implemented because of the potential for archaeological remains on the site, the site lies within the Chester Area of Archaeological Importance. The work was carried out by George Lacey and Rachael Matthews of L - P : Archaeology in September 2014. This report has been prepared by Rachael Matthews of L – P : Archaeology on behalf of Scottish Power. Research shows there is no evidence for Prehistoric activity on the site, however there is increasing evidence coming to light that indicates a Pre-Roman settlement of Chester. The site is situated to the east of the known Roman fortress of Deva and to the south of the main Roman road leading to the fortress from the east. During the Medieval Period it is likely the site area lay outside of the main settlement area and was used as agricultural fields serving the local population. This is thought to have continued through the Medieval period, as Chester grew. Throughout the Post Medieval period the site slowly developed and more buildings grew along the Headlands and Dee Lane; which remain bordering the open space which is now Grosvenor Park. Excavations revealed layers of 20th century build up, generally associated with the construction of the road and modern services, with in situ archaeology at a depth of 0.4m below the road surface. A 16th century sandstone and brick wall was identified running northeast-southwest and a 19th century sandstone wall was identified running northsouth.
